Making sure your boiler is running properly isn’t just good for saving money and making your home a bit more energy efficient, you need to make sure it’s running safely.
If you don’t get a professional to service your boiler regularly you might miss some signs that it’s faulty, and if it breaks, it’s going to cost you a lot more to get it fixed or replaced than it would have done to get someone to check it.
Ideally you want to get someone in to check your boiler once a year. It’s like servicing a car.
Even if it’s just that your boiler isn’t working as efficiently as it could, it’s going to cost you in the long-term in higher energy bills.
It could also put your warranty at risk if you’re not getting it serviced.
Plus, you just get the piece of mind that a big part of your house is functioning as it should.
Depending on the type of boiler you’ve got will determine how often you need it to be serviced.
For instance gas or oil boilers typically need more servicing than an electric system.
Getting your boiler professionally serviced
Make sure you hire a professional to maintain or service your boiler, and don’t be afraid to ask to see ID or certifications to make sure.
For instance, only an Oil Firing Technical Association (OFTEC) registered engineer is qualified to service an oil boiler.
If you have a gas boiler, make sure the engineer is Gas Safe Registered.
Again, you can always ask to see proof.
Is there a better time to get my boiler serviced?
No, as long as it’s done within 12 months of the last service then you can get it serviced at any time of the year.
Having said that, we’re usually busier in the winter with emergency call-outs so it might be better to get your boiler serviced in the summer or autumn.
That way you’ll at least be confident that it’s working before you get into the colder winter months.
What are the benefits again?
As we’ve said there are many safety benefits to getting your boiler checked every year, along with the cost and energy efficiency benefits.
Here’s some of the risks you run by not getting your boiler serviced regularly:
- Increasing energy bills
- Your boiler could break down
- Carbon monoxide leak (depending on the type of boiler you’ve got)
- Higher repair bills
- Less efficient utilities
